Mud, Mud, I Love Mud
Yet another reminder from my little friends to get dirty and joyfully play.
Our late winter arrived and dumped rain for days and days. When I arrived at my friend’s house in Bonny Doon the yard was soggy and full of puddles, with a meandering stream flowing through it.
My little friends, ages 4 and 8, and I put on our boots and headed out for some puddle jumping adventures. Paige led her brother and I the long way through the yard, highlighting the best (deepest) puddles, and eventually we followed the flowing water down to the drainage ditch that paralleled the road. She made sure that my boots were waterproof so I wouldn’t miss out on the fun.
I stood proudly by as they marched through the stream, the deepest parts running way over their boots, soaking their jeans and filling their boots with water and rocks. Giggles of delight and cries for help spilled out of them as they got their feet stuck in the thick, suction cup like mud. Standing nearby, I delighted in their delight, remembering these kinds of adventures my siblings and I would commonly embark on; loving how hours could go by, lost in play and exploration, despite the cold and wet. I sang to them the childhood anthem by Rick Charette, “I Love Mud.” ...
